KASHMIR
KANI
The dexterous Kani weaves in an exclusive combination of Khadi (on warp & weft) and wool (on discontinuous weft) forms the uniqueness of Gaurang’s luxurious Sarees, giving it the quintessential character and texture of a timeless classic entwined in drapes that drop to form a silken sheath - luxurious combination of lightness, softness and warmth.
In Kashmiri, Kani means ‘small sticks’, essentially wooden spools, used to weave each colour in separately, creating the meticulous eclectic patterns; this technique is also known as interlocking twill tapestry as the warps and wefts are set in a diagonal structure on the loom.
Giving a sense of tranquillity of Kashmir, the level of detail and craftsmanship that goes into Kani weaving is incredibly delicate and time consuming, an artisan can weave no more than an inch of Kani per day, our single exquisite Saree or a Shawl can take over two years if two artisans work on it for an average of 10 hours a day – making it a timeless piece of Art.
